The city is a small commercial and business spot, with a few businesses dealing mainly with consumer goods distribution. Founded in 1880, and incorporated on April 27, 1881, Durango is a venue for numerous concerts, festivals like Music in the Mountains, Durango Ragtime & Early Jazz Festival, and Snowdown Festival, as well as the place where such attractions like Animas River Valley, Durango & Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad, Main Avenue, Earthen Vessel Gallery, Scenic Aperture, Perins Peak State Wildlife Area, Animas Mountain East Trailhead, Overend Mountain Park Hidden Valley Trailhead, and others are located. U.S. Highway 160 and U.S. Highway 550 serve the city. Durango-La Plata County Airport is located 12 miles southeast of the city center. Durango is also home to Fort Lewis College.
