The Mississippi River is one of the largest rivers and the most important water sources in the central region of the United States of America. Its name emerged from a local dialect and can be interpreted as "the Great River". The river has its sources somewhere in the north of Minnesota, mainly in Itasca Lake, and flows through or outlines borders of 10 states, from the north to the very south of the country, right into the Gulf of Mexico. The total length of the river is estimated to reach 2,340 miles making it the fourth longest river in the world. The rivers like the Illinois, Ohio, Missouri, Arkansas, White, and other rivers are the main tributaries of the Mississippi River. The river has a very diverse and interesting eco-system and plays a key role in many aspects of the country's economy, life, and culture.

The Mississippi River is geographically divided into three regions. The Upper Mississippi is the upper part of the river, from its source to the confluence with the river of Missouri near the city of St. Louis. This part is approximately one thousand miles long. The Middle Mississippi River starts near the city of St.Louis and continues till the point where the Mississippi meets the river of Ohio, near the city of Cairo in the state of Illinois. This is the shortest part of the river and has the length of just about 380 miles. Finally, the Lower Mississippi River starts in the above mentioned point and ends up in the delta, where the waters of the Mississippi River discharge into the waters of the Gulf of Mexico. The Lower Mississippi River is about 1,000 miles long as well.
