Duomo di Milano, Italy

The world’s fifth-largest cathedral and the largest in modern-day Italy, Duomo di Milano (the Cathedral of Milan) attracts thousands of visitors every day. Located in the very center of Milan on the square of the same name, Piazza del Duomo, it is one of the most famous and most visited landmarks in the country. The cathedral has a construction history spanning several centuries: the first stone was laid in the late 14th century, and the final opening took place in the early 20th century. The building is about 65 meters high, but including the outer details of its spires and dome, it rises to over 100 meters (more than 350 feet). Built from striking white Candoglia marble, the cathedral is also linked to Leonardo da Vinci, who is known to have contributed to the design of certain parts of the structure. 

The Duomo has an estimated capacity of nearly 40,000 people and remains an active place of worship, making it possible to attend mass there on a regular basis. Dedicated to the Nativity of Saint Mary, the Duomo is the principal cathedral of the Archbishop of the region. One of its highlights is the observation area on the roof, which is especially popular with tourists and offers stunning views of the surrounding neighborhoods. The rooftop terrace is decorated with columns and statues dating back to the 19th century.
