I've been to Seville twice, and discovered the Military Museum during my second trip. It is almost never mentioned in any of the web sites covering museums in Seville, or in Spain in general, which reflects the general ignorance / dislike of all things military in the tourism industry. Spain has a very rich military / naval history, hundreds of years of it, they once ruled most of the known world, and their armies and navies played a major role in European as well as world history. The Military Museum in Seville is indeed small, and dated in terms of its curatorial/exhibition methodology, but it is well worth visiting for the range of history covered, especially if one has any interest in European history. I suspect that the museum suffers not only from its location, a space not built to serve as a modern museum, but also from a lack of interest on the part of local government agencies The museum is under the management of the Ministry of Defense, which operates quite a few military museums around Spain, the best being the relatively new Army Museum in Toledo. I suspect the Ministry has little local incentive to make more of the Seville museum than it has, for a variety of budgetary and political reasons. Its a pity, as I say, the museum appears to have a good collection, no doubt more in storage, and more could be done with the space under a more active and committed local management focused on updating the exhibits and indeed, promoting the museum.
