What is Latitude and Longitude?

Latitude and Longitude are the units that represent the coordinates at geographic coordinate system. Just like every actual house has its address (which includes the number, the name of the street, city, etc), every single point on the surface of earth can be specified by the latitude and longitude coordinates. Therefore, by using latitude and longitude we can specify virtually any point on earth.

The latitude has the symbol of phi, and it shows the angle between the straight line in the certain point and the equatorial plane. The latitude is specified by degrees, starting from 0° and ending up with 90° to both sides of the equator, making latitude Northern and Southern. The equator is the line with 0° latitude. The longitude has the symbol of lambda and is another angular coordinate defining the position of a point on a surface of earth. The longitude is defined as an angle pointing west or east from the Greenwich Meridian, which is taken as the Prime Meridian. The longitude can be defined maximum as 180° east from the Prime Meridian and 180° west from the Prime Meridian.

Both latitude and longitude are measured in degrees, which are in turn divided into minutes and seconds. For example, the tropical zone which is located to the south and to the north from the Equator is determined by the limits of 23°26'13.7'' S and 23°26'13.7'' N. Or. For example, the geographical coordinates of the mount Ngauruhoe in New Zealand, famous with its being the filming area for the Lord of the Rings movie, has the geographic coordinates of 39°09'24.6''S 175°37'55.8''E.

About Lat Long is an online geographic tool that can be used to lookup latitude and longitude of a place, and get its coordinates on map. You can search for a place using a city's or town's name, as well as the name of special places, and the correct lat long coordinates will be shown at the bottom of the latitude longitude finder form. At that, the place you found will be displayed with the point marker centered on map. Also the gps coordinates will be displayed below the map.

Thank you so much! I needed to put a Google map for directions to our church into the church website (I am the webmaster), and it showed the church to be in the wrong spot.

After finding this site, I managed to get the right coordinates to add to my website, and now it shows the church to be where it really is. I am very happy about that!

It is very helpful to feed the navigation system of may camping van with precise coordinations of camp grounds, sleeping places and all other POI.
BTW - to convert longitude/latitude into coordinates for MapFactor Navigator just multiply the values with 3,600,000

How do I get the latitudes and the longitudes of a list of cities? Instead of inputting one by one, I would like to submit say 900 city/state/country names and obtain their corresponding latitudes and longitudes. Please, help. Thanks.

Finding Lat long of map here is a very nice feature. Can some one tell me if we have something like mentioned below:

how do I get the lat and long of a particular area?
If I have the lat and long, how will I know it belongs to a particular area?

I am looking for a map which highlights a particular searched area example 'BTM Layout Bangalore' and it shows the border line of BTM layout.
Hovering mouse on the border I can know lat long.
With this I can determine the lat long which falls under a particular area.

Thanks so much for this wonderful tool. Now i can see our geographical locations in my home district.

Sam 2015-08-05 15:43:36

I love this site!!!!
I built a program using Microsoft Access which plots locations on a road map type picture of an area. I use lat and long compared to the maximum and minimum lat and long covered by the map picture. Trying to make it more friendly to a general user I was adding a button to open your site and was trying to feed it the address from our database. I can do that on other mapping sites, but every way I tried to pass address parameters to your site got me a reply that it couldn't find the location.
If that isn't possible that would be a magnificent feature to add. If it should work would you mind letting me know the format to send the address information. Thanks so much for this site!

Elena Govor 2015-07-26 02:47:11

Something terrible has happened with the search engine of this great site since yesterday!!!
Now it provides Google suggestions of the place, but in many cases in this suggestions the place itself is missing. For instance when I am searching for Brest in Belarus, I am offered 'Brest region Belarus' and there is no way way to get coordinates of the town of Brest itself unless I reload the page and guess to type 'Brest Brest District Brest Region'. But even this does not always work.
Is it possible to make this Google interference optional?

Is there any way to convert from UTMs (which I collect with my GPS unit in the field) to lat/long using your website? And then, is there any way to have that location, after conversion to lat/long, plotted as a smallish dot on your air-photos of an area (it looks like you are using Google Earth war-photos)?

Here we should see a longitude of exactly 0 right? Why isn't it? It's off by about 100 meter!
