Ampato is a dormant stratovolcano in southern Peru, located to south of the Colca Canyon in the Andes. It is a 6,288 m (20,630 ft) volcano that for many years does not display any sort of activity. It is part of the Andean Volcanic Belt. Momia Juanita, also known as the Lady of Ampato, the well-preserved frozen body of a girl from the Inca Empire, was discovered by Johan Reinhard on Mount Ampato. It is believed that she was killed as a human sacrifice to the Inca gods in the 15th century. Her nickname is the Ice Maiden and has been on display at Museo Santuarios Andinos in Arequipa. Mummy Juanita was listed as one of the world's top ten discoveries by Times magazine.
