Atacama Desert (Desierto de Atacama) is a large desert plateau next to the Pacific coast in South America, located west of the Andes Mountains, in the northern part of the country. The most part of the plateau is taken by the Atacama Desert, which stretches along the Pacific coast for about 600 miles. Known as the driest desert on earth, it is bordered by the Andes to the east and is a large area of close to 41 thousand square miles. It has a rich variety of flora with over 500 species including thyme, llareta, the pimiento tree, saltgrass, kumbaru, etc. The desert is also home to a few animal species such as liolaemus nitidus, liolaemus fabiani, Iguanians, lava lizards, Humboldt penguins, Andean flamingos, and so on.
