Dushanbe (Душанбе) is the capital city of Tajikistan, located at the confluence of the Kofarnihon River and the Varzob River. Formerly known as Stalinabad (1929–1961), it is the largest city in the country. The city served as the capital of the Tajik Autonomous Soviet Socialist Republic until Tajikistan gained independence from the Soviet Union on 9 September 1991. Following the Tajik Civil War, Dushanbe remained the capital of an independent Tajikistan. Today, it is the cultural, educational, financial, tourism, and economic hub of the country.
Dushanbe is home to several prestigious universities, including Tajik National University, the largest university in Tajikistan and one of the leading institutions in Central Asia. Other major educational institutions include Tajik State Medical University, the Technological University of Tajikistan, the Tajik State Pedagogical University, and the Tajik University of Law, Business and Politics.
The city is served by an advanced transportation system. Dushanbe International Airport offers numerous domestic and international flights, connecting the city with destinations such as Istanbul, Dubai, and many major cities across Central Asia and Russia. The airport, which serves as the hub for Tajik Air, is located very close to the city center. Dushanbe is also served by the Dushanbe Railway Station, as well as bus and trolleybus systems.
Dushanbe is well known for its large and beautiful parks, including Rudaki Park, Firdavsi Park, and its botanical gardens. One of the city’s most iconic landmarks is the Flagpole of Tajikistan, once recognized as the tallest flagpole in the world. It is located within Rudaki Park. Nearby is the National Museum of Tajikistan, a major history museum established in 1934, showcasing exhibits on natural, ancient, and modern history.
The National Library of Tajikistan, established on March 20, 2012, is located at 6 Tehron Street. Housed in a nine-story building, it features 15 reading halls and an extensive collection of books, along with a free digital library for citizens. Another important cultural site is the Ayni Opera and Ballet Theatre, a historic opera house located at 28 Husseinzoda Street. Opened in 1941, it is surrounded by attractions such as the Opera House Fountain, Opera Ballet Square, Alisher Navoi Park, and the National Museum of Antiquities of Tajikistan.
The Palace of the Nation, located on Shirinshoh Shohtemur Street, serves as the official residence of the President of Tajikistan. Built in 2008, the four-story palace stands in the heart of the city, next to Rudaki Park.
