Estadio Azteca (Estadio Banorte) is a football stadium in Coyoacán, a borough of Mexico City, located at 19.3028392, -99.1508804. Formerly known as Estadio Azteca and Estadio Guillermo Cañedo, it is the home ground of Club América and also hosts matches of the Mexico national team. It opened on 29 May 1966 and was designed by Pedro Ramírez Vázquez and Rafael Mijares Alcérreca. The stadium has a capacity of 87,523, making it one of the biggest football stadiums in the world. It has hosted many major events, including the 1970 and 1986 FIFA World Cups, the 1968 Summer Olympics, and the 1971 Women’s World Cup. The highest football attendance in the stadium’s history was 119,853 for the Mexico–Brazil match on 7 July 1968. Estadio Azteca is also the venue for the opening match of the 2026 FIFA World Cup on June 11, 2026.
