Abu Ayyub al-Ansari, a close friend of the prophet Muhammad, is thought to be buried in this mosque. Also, many Ottoman royal family members and officials are buried here, including Sokollu Mehmed Pasha, Siyavuş Pasha, and Lala Mustafa Pasha. Constructed in 1458 in the Ottoman Baroque style by the Ottoman sultan Mehmed II, also known as Mehmed the Conqueror, and rebuilt in 1800, the mosque has two minarets and is known for its Iznik tiles. Eyüp Sultan Mosque is one of the most visited mosques in Istanbul, situated close to other historical landmarks and many cafes.
