Göbekli Tepe is a Neolithic site located in Örencik, about 12 km northeast of Şanlıurfa which is in the southeastern part of Anatolia, Turkey. It is one of the most important archaeological sites and the oldest temple in the world. Referred to as the “point zero of history", the site dates back to the 9th–10th millennium BCE and includes the T-shaped stone pillars which are the world's oldest known megaliths. These structures are about 7 thousand years older than the Stonehenge megaliths. Göbekli Tepe has been part of the UNESCO World Heritage list since 2018. It was first investigated by Istanbul University and the University of Chicago in 1963, reexamined again by Klaus Schmidt, a German archeologist from the German Archaeological Institute in collaboration with the Şanlıurfa Museum in 1994. You can visit the Şanlıurfa Archeology Museum located at Haleplibahçe, 2372. Sokak, Eyyübiye/Şanlıurfa, to see findings from the ruins of Göbekli Tepe as well as from Şanlıurfa and its surroundings. The museum serves in its modern building since 2015.
