Guatemala City (Ciudad de Guatemala) is the capital and largest city of Guatemala, a country in Central America. Located in the central highlands, the city is known for its striking setting, surrounded by several impressive volcanoes, including Agua, Fuego, and Acatenango. As the country’s main cultural, political, and economic hub, Guatemala City plays a central role in national life. The metropolitan area covers 80 square miles, making it one of the largest urban areas in Central America.

The city lies in a mountain valley between the Pacific coastal plains and the northern lowlands. Administratively, it is divided into 16 numbered districts known as “zones”. Despite its tropical latitude, Guatemala City enjoys a relatively mild climate due to its elevation, with moderate temperatures throughout the year and no extreme heat. Thus, there are many parks and green zones in Guatemala City.

Public transportation mainly consists of bus systems, including the Transmetro, which serves key routes across the city. However, the city does not have a subway or suburban rail network. Unfortunately, due to its location in a geologically active region, Guatemala City is prone to natural hazards such as earthquakes and occasional volcanic activity in the surrounding areas.
