The Gulf of Mexico is a small part of the North Atlantic Ocean, which embraces the coastlines of Mexico and the United States of America. This water body is known as one of the largest gulfs in the Northern Hemisphere. The surface area of the gulf is estimated to be close to 600,000 square miles, and the maximum width of the gulf is slightly less than 1,000 miles. To its north, the gulf is bordered by the southern states of the US, namely Florida, Alabama, Mississippi, Louisiana, and Texas. Mexican coastal areas are the western and southern borders of the gulf. To the east, the gulf faces the northern shores of the Republic of Cuba and the area of the Bahamas. In its southeastern part, the Gulf of Mexico is adjacent to the Caribbean Sea known as the Mediterranean Sea of the North Atlantic Ocean.

The total length of the coastline of the Gulf of Mexico is estimated to be exceeding 4,000 miles, with most of those being the shorelines of the US and Mexico. There are two major straits which connect the gulf with the neighboring bodies of water. Those are the straits of Florida which connects the Gulf of Mexico with the North Atlantic Ocean, and the Yucatan Channel located between the Gulf of Mexico and the Caribbean Sea. There are 33 large and plenty of smaller rivers that discharge into the gulf. The coastal area of the gulf is the location of many large cities like Tampa, Mobile, New Orleans, Houston, Corpus Christi, Tampico, Coatzacoalcos, Heroica Veracruz, Campeche, and, of course, Cancun and Havana. There are a great deal of oil platforms located in the gulf; thus, the gulf brings great incomes to the countries located nearby.
