Jacmel, nicknamed the Culture Capital or the City of Artists, is a city in the southern territories of Haiti, located on the Bay of Jacmel. It was founded by the Spanish Nicolás de Ovando at the beginning of the 16th century. The city is famous for its Gingerbread houses and its carnival. It is also home to the Ciné Institute, a film school founded by American filmmaker David Belle in 2008. It is the first and only film school in Haiti. Jacmel has hosted the annual Jacmel Film Festival since 2004, which was also founded by David Belle. The city is served by Jacmel Airport and the Port of Jacmel.
The 2010 Haiti earthquake, which occurred on 12 January 2010, caused heavy damage in Jacmel and surrounding areas, killing thousands. Many important landmarks of the city were destroyed, including the Port-au-Prince Cathedral and the Presidential Palace.
