Kampala, Uganda

Kampala is the capital city of Uganda, a country located in the equatorial region of Africa, and it is also the country’s largest and most populous city. The city is situated in the southern part of Uganda, close to the northern shores of Lake Victoria, the largest lake in Africa. Kampala lies along the shores of Murchison Bay, one of the lake’s main inlets, while the central parts of the city are located on a series of hills overlooking the surrounding valley. The capital covers an area of about 70 square miles (around 180 square kilometers) and is administratively divided into five boroughs: Central, Kawempe, Makindye, Nakawa, and Rubaga.

Kampala is widely regarded as one of the fastest-growing capital cities in Africa. It is located about 410 miles (660 km) northwest of Nairobi, the capital of Kenya, and approximately 735 miles (1,180 km) southeast of Addis Ababa, the capital of Ethiopia. The city has diverse geographical features, with rolling hills, valleys, and wetlands near Lake Victoria. The region is characterized by a humid equatorial climate and fertile lands that support agriculture in the surrounding areas.

As the political, economic, and cultural center of Uganda, Kampala serves as the country’s main business hub. Many residents are employed in the service sector, trade, finance, and various commercial enterprises. The city also features several historic buildings, old churches, markets, and cultural landmarks that attract visitors. Kampala is surrounded by rapidly growing suburban areas and neighboring communities such as Nakawa, Nansana, Bulenga, Kyengera, and Kitebi. To the southeast of the city, there are extensive swampy and marshy areas along the northern shores of Murchison Bay, forming an important natural wetland ecosystem connected to Lake Victoria.
