Lake Vostok is known as the largest lake of Antarctica. Its area is estimated to be close to 4,830 square miles and its maximum depth is estimated to be up to 3 thousand feet. The length of the lake is about 160 miles and the width of the lake is close to 30 miles. The lake is located close to the Russian Polar Station Vostok (meaning the East in Russian), so it has got the name after the name of the station. It is interesting that the lake is actually a newly discovered one as it was only supposed that the lake exists, in the middle of the last century. In the early 2010s the existence of the lake was proven and its first measurements were made. Most of the probes and explorations of the lake were made by Russian scientists from Vostok Polar Station.
