Mitte, Berlin, Germany

Mitte is one of Berlin’s central boroughs and lies along the banks of the Spree River. Once a smaller administrative district, it has grown into the historic and geographic core of the city. Today, Mitte consists of six subdivisions and is considered Berlin’s cultural and artistic center.

The borough is bordered by Charlottenburg-Wilmersdorf, Reinickendorf, Pankow, Friedrichshain-Kreuzberg, and Tempelhof-Schöneberg. Due to its concentration of museums, galleries, theaters, and historic landmarks, Mitte is one of Berlin’s most important tourist destinations.

Mitte is home to many of the city’s most iconic sites, including Museum Island, Checkpoint Charlie, the Reichstag Building, Berlin Hauptbahnhof, Brandenburg Gate, Unter den Linden, the Berlin TV Tower, Potsdamer Platz, and Alexanderplatz. The area also features numerous parks, monuments, memorials, embassies, and cultural institutions.

Major green spaces and points of interest in and around Mitte include Tiergarten Park, the Rose Garden, Fritz-Schloß Park, Nordhafen Park, Leopoldplatz, Goethe Park, and the Englischer Garten. Cultural and educational landmarks such as Hamburger Bahnhof - Museum für Gegenwart, the Mall of Berlin, the Museum für Naturkunde, Futurium, the Memorial to the Murdered Jews of Europe, Spreebogen, Schloss Bellevue, and the Staatsbibliothek zu Berlin – Preußischer Kulturbesitz further highlight the borough’s central role in Berlin’s cultural and civic life.
