It was incorporated on May 1, 1882, and named after the novel "A Legend of Montrose" by Sir Walter Scott. Montrose is known for its spectacular location in the Uncompahgre Valley and is surrounded by the Black Canyon of the Gunnison National Park and the San Juan Mountains. Montrose Regional Airport, U.S. Route 50, and U.S. Route 550 serve the area. True Grit (1969) was filmed in and around Montrose. Tourist attractions in the city are Montrose Botanic Gardens, Ute Indian Museum, Museum of the Mountain West, Riverbottom Park, Cerise Park, Montrose County Historical Museum, and a few hiking areas.
