Muscat, Oman

Muscat is the largest city and the capital of Oman. It is located in the northern coastal part of the country and faces the Gulf of Oman, which is part of the Arabian Sea. The opposite shores of southern Iran are located about 100 miles to the north and northwest of Muscat. The total area of the city, together with its numerous neighborhoods, is estimated to be close to 1,400 square miles.

The city is situated in the northern part of the Western Al Hajar Mountains, located in the eastern Arabian Peninsula, which is the southwestern area of the Asian continent. The city of Muscat is located about 185 miles east of Al Ain, about 220 miles southeast of the Strait of Hormuz, and about 275 miles east of Abu Dhabi, the capital of the United Arab Emirates.

Muscat is the largest port in the Gulf of Oman. It is surrounded by many neighborhoods and small towns such as Qurm, Mina Al Fahl, Ruwi, Darsait, Bawshar, Al Muna, Bawshar Heights, and the Ghala Industrial Estate. The cities of Barka, Seeb, Al Hajar, and Quriyat are the closest ones to Muscat. The city center is situated mainly in the western part of the urban area.

Muscat International Airport, one of the largest and most important transportation hubs in the country, is located about 11 miles west of the city center. There are a few small rivers in the area that flow down from the Al Hajar Mountains. Wadi River is the largest of these, and it crosses the city from the southern to the northern side.
