Ogaden is a historical name for Ethiopia’s second-largest regional state, the Somali Region in the eastern part of the country, located along the border with Somalia. It is also bordered by Djibouti and Kenya. The region covers an area of over 300,000 km² and consists mainly of a vast plateau, along with desert and semi-arid zones. It is predominantly inhabited by ethnic Somalis. The region also contains several protected natural areas and wildlife reserves that are managed by the government.
The Ogaden War, fought between Somalia and Ethiopia from July 1977 to March 1978, also deeply affected this region. The conflict ended with an Ethiopian victory and resulted in the killing and wounding of thousands of people.
