Riga, Latvia

Riga is the capital city of Latvia and one of the most beautiful and historic cities in Northern Europe. It was founded in 1201 during the medieval period (often linked to early German and Viking trade routes). Over the centuries, the city was ruled by Swedish and Russian powers and later became part of the Soviet Union. Its modern development accelerated after Latvia regained independence in the early 1990s following the collapse of the Soviet Union. Today, Riga is one of the top tourist destinations in the Baltic region, with a large number of attractions, historic monuments, parks, theaters, and international cultural events. The historic center of the city is included on the UNESCO World Heritage List, and the impressive domes of Riga Cathedral and St. Peter's Church remain among the most iconic landmarks for visitors.

The city is located on the shores of the Baltic Sea and on the banks of the Daugava River. With a municipal area exceeding 100 square miles, Riga is the largest city in the country. It lies in the central part of Latvia, and its average elevation is about 70–75 feet above sea level. Riga is the main center of tourism, business, and transportation in Latvia. The city is served by Riga International Airport, located about 11 miles west of the downtown area. Riga frequently hosts international events, including official meetings and summits of European Union institutions, as well as numerous sports and cultural events.
