Samara, or Smara, is a large municipality in northern Western Sahara. It is a province level town with the population exceeding 40,000 people. It is a commercial spot situated at the intersection of a few large state highways. The first settlement appeared there in the middle of the 19th century, as a small oasis type settlement. It used to be ruled by the Moroccan authorities, until it was given back to Saharan government a few decades later.
