San Salvador is the capital city of El Salvador, located about 63 kilometers southeast of Santa Ana. It is the largest city in the country and serves as its economic, cultural, religious, and political center. The city is home to many government institutions, including the Supreme Court of El Salvador and the official residence of the president of the Republic of El Salvador. It also hosts several important educational institutions, such as the University of El Salvador.
San Salvador offers numerous attractions, accommodation options, shopping centers, and business hubs. Unfortunately, San Salvador is located in a seismically active area. A magnitude 6.6 earthquake on February 13, 2001, caused the deaths of 315 people and injured around 3,400 others.

Historic Downtown San Salvador dates back to the 16th century and includes some of the city’s most important sites, such as the National Palace, the National Theater, the Metropolitan Cathedral of the Holy Savior, Plaza Libertad, Plaza Gerardo Barrios, and the Monumento al Divino Salvador del Mundo. Cuscatlán Stadium, with a seating capacity of 44,836, is one of the country’s most important football venues. Opened on July 24, 1976, it has hosted matches of the El Salvador national football team and was formerly home to Alianza F.C. and C.D. Atlético Marte. Metrocentro San Salvador, a large shopping mall located on Boulevard de los Héroes, is another popular spot for both locals and tourists, offering many stores and dining options.
