Santo Domingo: Capital of the Dominican Republic

Santo Domingo is a large and historic city in the Dominican Republic, located in the southern part of the country. It is the capital and the largest city, founded by Europeans at the end of the 15th century. The city is the country’s main center for tourism, education, culture, and business. Santo Domingo is known for its beautiful parks and several attractive beaches. It also has a large and active port.

Ciudad Colonial, the historic district of Santo Domingo, was added to the UNESCO World Heritage Site List in 1990. The city is home to the Universidad Autónoma de Santo Domingo (UASD), one of the oldest universities in the Western Hemisphere. Other major higher education institutions include Instituto Tecnológico de Santo Domingo (INTEC), Universidad Adventista Dominicana (UNAD), Universidad APEC (UNAPEC), and Universidad Tecnológica de Santiago (UTESA).

The city is served by Aeropuerto Internacional La Isabela and Las Américas International Airport. The Port of Santo Domingo is located on the Ozama River, about 16 kilometres from the Port of Haina Occidental, which is situated on the Haina River.
