Shusha or Shushi (Şuşa in Azerbaijani, Շուշի in Armenian) is Karabakh's second-largest city located in the Karabakh mountains, the disputed region of Nagorno-Karabakh in the South Caucasus. Founded in 1752 by Panah Ali Khan, the city has a mixed Armenian–Azerbaijani population. It was the capital of the Karabakh Khanate. The city has cultural and strategic importance for both countries. It has become a home to many Azerbaijani and Armenian singers, actors, poets, novelists, journalists, and other intellectuals. The city is also home to the Ghazanchetsots (Holy Saviour) Cathedral, the Armenian Apostolic Church, the Shushi Museum, the NKR Museum of Fine Arts, Shushi Art Gallery, Yukhari Govhar Agha Mosque, Natavan House, and Shusha Fortress. The 2020 Nagorno-Karabakh war between the two countries began on 27 September 2020. On November 8, the President of Azerbaijan, Ilham Aliyev announced that the Azerbaijani forces have taken control of the city, but Armenian officials denied it.
