Surtsey is an uninhabited island in Iceland, located in the Vestmannaeyjar archipelago in the southernmost tip of the country. It was formed by an underwater volcanic eruption from 1963 to 1967. The island has an area of 1.4 km² (0.54 sq mi) and a highest elevation of 155 m (509 ft). Surtsey was designated as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2008. Visits to Surtsey are strictly prohibited to ensure that the ecological succession of the island remains as natural as possible. Today, only a few scientists can visit the island. Surtsey is home to a gull colony, migrating birds, geese, ravens, grey seals, starfish, and harbour seals. Mosses and lichens mostly cover the island. Birds have contributed to improving the soil quality on the island, allowing more vascular plant species to grow.
