Tirana, Albania

Tirana is one of the oldest and largest cities in Albania, serving as the country’s main administrative, political, economic, and cultural center. Established centuries before the Ottoman era, modern Tirana still preserves clear traces of Ottoman influence in its architecture, cuisine, culture, and religious heritage.

Surrounded by scenic hills, Tirana is a large European city with many attractions and landmarks, although it is not considered among the continent’s top tourist destinations. The city is home to seven universities, an opera house, more than 20 theaters, numerous museums, libraries, concert halls, sports and recreational facilities, parks, shopping centers, markets, and other cultural and social institutions.

Tirana covers an area of about 16 square miles (41 square kilometers) and is located in the lowlands approximately 25 miles (40 km) east of the coast of the Adriatic Sea. To the east of the city are several protected natural areas, including Dajti Mountain National Park, Mali me Gropa-Bizë-Martanesh Protected Landscape, and Qafshtama National Park. The region also features beautiful lakes such as Bovilla Lake. Further east, the highlands of the Balkan Mountains begin.

The eastern skyline of Tirana is dominated by Mount Dajti, which rises to nearly 6,300 feet (1,920 meters). Visitors can take a cable car to the mountain and enjoy panoramic views of the capital and its surrounding areas.
