Valletta is the capital city of the Republic of Malta, located between two natural harbours: Marsamxett Harbour and the Grand Harbour. Although small in size, it is a stunning Mediterranean city and serves as the country’s main touristic, cultural, and economic hub. The local economy mainly relies on tourism, supported by numerous attractions, natural beauty, and historical landmarks. Visitors can find various accommodation and dining options throughout the city. Valletta is also home to a campus of the University of Malta. Nicknamed Il-Belt, the city was named after its founder, Jean de Parisot Valette, in 1566 and officially became Malta’s capital on 18 March 1571.
Valletta has many claims to fame, from being the smallest capital in the European Union to an open-air museum, offering history at every turn. It is also one of the sunniest cities in Europe. It has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1980 for its well-preserved Renaissance character and historical significance.
St John’s Co-Cathedral is one of Valletta’s most remarkable landmarks. Designed by Girolamo Cassar and built in the 16th century, it is a fine example of Baroque architecture. The cathedral houses outstanding artworks, including The Beheading of Saint John the Baptist (1608) and Saint Jerome Writing (1607–1608) by Caravaggio, making it a must-visit place in Malta.
The fortifications of Valletta, dating back to the 16th century, are also part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site. These fortifications witnessed some of the most significant conflicts in Malta’s history, such as the French invasion of 1798, the Siege of Malta between 1798 and 1800, and World War II.
Lower Barrakka is a popular destination among locals and visitors in the capital. This peaceful garden offers scenic views, monuments, and a relaxing atmosphere overlooking the Grand Harbour.
Valletta has also hosted the annual Valletta International Baroque Festival since 2013, which is considered one of the most important music festivals in the country.
