Vatnajökull is a famous icy peak situated in Vatnajökull National Park in eastern Iceland. It is the largest and the most popular ice glacier on the island, known also as Water Glacier. The area of the glacier is really large and in its peak, in deep winter time, it occupies up to one tenth of the area of the island. It is also considered to be the second largest glacier in Europe, being smaller only than one glacier in Norway. It was discovered that there are a few volcanoes hidden under the layers of ice. Sometimes they erupt and create so called small jökulhlaup, which are melted ice and lava containing lakes. The glacier is really beautiful and is visited by quite a large number of tourists who are ready to go that far to the north to enjoy the local nature.
