About This Area Calculator
Area Calculator helps you measure different areas on Earth. It is useful in various fields, such as calculating floor areas in construction and architecture, determining field or greenhouse areas in agriculture, identifying the dimensions of properties in real estate, and calculating the areas of forests, lakes, and other natural regions in geography, and much more. Or, if you are simply curious about learning the measurement of an area, you can use our area calculator.
This interactive tool allows you to measure the area of any custom shape directly on the map. By drawing polygons, you can calculate land size in square meters, square kilometers, or hectares instantly.
Whether you're planning a construction project, analyzing agricultural fields, or simply exploring geographical spaces, this calculator provides quick and precise measurements. The polygon drawing interface is intuitive, providing live previews of lines and clear visualization of the selected area.
Click the “Clear” button anytime to start a new measurement. All calculations are based on accurate geodesic formulas, ensuring reliable results across any location on the globe.
What is Area?
Area is the measure of a surface, space, or region. For example, Central Park in Manhattan, New York, has an area of 843 acres (341 ha; 3.41 km²). Manhattan itself has a total area of about 87 km². Lake Superior in North America, which is the world’s largest freshwater lake by surface area, covers an area of about 82,100 square kilometers. The Amazon Rainforest covers an area of about 5.5 million square kilometers, while the Sahara Desert has an area of approximately 9.2 million square kilometers. Vatican City, the smallest country in the world, covers a total area of 0.49 square km.
Area Calculation Formula
The area of a polygon is calculated using geodesic formulas that account for the Earth's curvature. Turf.js automatically computes the area in square meters (m²) when you provide polygon coordinates in [longitude, latitude] format.
Area Mathematical Concept
For a polygon with vertices (xi, yi), the planar (Cartesian) area is calculated as:
Area = 1/2 * | Σ (xi * yi+1 - xi+1 * yi) |
Here, the last point is the same as the first to close the polygon: (xn+1, yn+1) = (x1, y1).
Geodesic Area on Earth
For accurate measurements on the Earth's surface, Turf.js uses a geodesic calculation based on the spherical excess formula:
Area = R² * Σ Δλi * (sin φi+1 - sin φi)
Where:
- R = Earth's radius (~6,371,000 m)
- φi = latitude of point i in radians
- Δλi = longitude difference between consecutive points
Unit Conversion
Once calculated in square meters (m²), the area can be converted as follows:
- 1 km² = 1,000,000 m²
- 1 ha = 10,000 m²
