Starring John Magaro, Orion Lee, Toby Jones, Ewen Bremner, Scott Shepherd, Gary Farmer, Alia Shawkat, and Lily Gladstone, the film premiered on August 30, 2019, at the Telluride Film Festival, and was released by A24 on March 6, 2020, in the United States. The National Board of Review named First Cow as one of the top 10 films of 2020. First Cow was shot in Oregon, United States. The opening scene was filmed on Chatham Island on the Columbia River. Filming locations included Milo McIver State Park, Oxbow Regional Park, Howell Territorial Park, and Bybee-Howell House.
