Bandung is a large city and the capital of West Java, a province of Indonesia. It is located in the central part of the province and is one of the largest cities in the country, alongside Jakarta, Surabaya, and a few others. Bandung is also one of the most well-known cities in Indonesia, serving as a center for the country’s culture, social life, education, and commerce. Bandung is located about 90 miles from Jakarta, making the two cities heavily interconnected with similar urban cultures. The area has a subtropical climate, but Bandung experiences cooler and less humid summers compared to other nearby cities and coastal towns.

History and Settlement

The first settlement in the area of modern-day Bandung was established by European settlers, reportedly from Denmark and the Netherlands. These settlers began by establishing small farms, cultivating tea and other crops. Indonesia gained independence in the mid-20th century, after which Bandung developed into a modern urban area.
