George Washington's Mount Vernon

Mount Vernon, located in Fairfax County, Virginia, U.S., is the estate and burial place of George Washington, the first President of the United States, and his family. Originally known as Little Hunting Creek Plantation, the property sits on the banks of the Potomac River, near the Maryland state border and about 9 miles southwest of Alexandria.

Architecture and History of Mount Vernon
The estate, located at 3200 Mount Vernon Memorial Highway, covers approximately 500 acres (200 hectares). It was built in 1758 in the Palladian architectural style. Later, the mansion was restored by the Mount Vernon Ladies' Association.

National Historic Landmark and Preservation
Mount Vernon was designated a U.S. National Historic Landmark on December 19, 1960, and added to the National Register of Historic Places on October 15, 1966. The property also includes the tomb of George Washington.
