Hackensack, formerly known as New Barbadoes Township, is a municipality in New Jersey, United States, located on the Hackensack River. It serves as the seat of Bergen County. It was incorporated at the end of the 17th century and reincorporated as Hackensack on November 21, 1921. The city is situated about 17 miles northwest of Midtown Manhattan, close to the state border with New York. The city is home to HMH Hackensack University Medical Center, Bergen County Jail, and Fairleigh Dickinson University. I-80 Express passes through the area. Routes 4 and 17 and County Route 503 also serve the city. Hackensack is bordered by Bogota and Teaneck to the east, Hasbrouck Heights to the southwest, Little Ferry to the south, Maywood to the west, and River Edge to the north. Teterboro Airport and three train stations serve the area. Local attractions include Hackensack River County Park, Hackensack River Pathway, Columbus Park, the Bergen Museum of Art & Science, the Bergen County Courthouse, the First Dutch Reformed Church, and Borg's Woods Nature Preserve.
