Kigali is the capital city of Rwanda, located in the central part of the country within a mountainous landscape of rolling hills and valleys. Founded in the early 20th century, the city is made up of three main districts: Gasabo, Kicukiro, and Nyarugenge. Today, Kigali is Rwanda’s largest city and the center of the country’s political, cultural, economic, and educational life.
Between 7 April and 19 July 1994, Rwanda experienced one of the darkest chapters in its history during the Rwandan genocide, which took place amid the Rwandan Civil War. An estimated 500,000 to 662,000 Tutsi were killed, with total deaths ranging from 520,000 to 702,000. About 30 kilometers south of Kigali, the Nyamata Genocide Memorial forms part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site as the Memorial Sites of the 1994 Genocide against the Tutsi in Rwanda. These tragic events were also brought to international attention in Terry George’s 2004 film Hotel Rwanda, starring Don Cheadle, Joaquin Phoenix, and Nick Nolte. The film tells the true story of hotel manager Paul Rusesabagina and his wife Tatiana, who sheltered 1,268 Hutu and Tutsi refugees at the Hôtel des Mille Collines in Kigali.
In recent decades, Kigali has developed into a modern city, hosting the presidential residence, government institutions, and a growing number of educational facilities, tourist attractions, and businesses. One of its most recognizable landmarks is Kigali City Tower, a 20-story complex completed in 2011 and currently the tallest building in Rwanda. The city also hosted the Rwanda Film Festival from 2005 to 2019 and is known for its local cuisine, as well as traditional music and dance.
Education plays an important role in Kigali’s urban life. The city is home to institutions such as the Kigali Institute of Science and Technology, Kigali Independent University, the University of Rwanda, and the University of Kigali. Kigali International Airport serves the city, offering connections to both regional and international destinations.
Sports are also an integral part of life in Kigali. The city’s main sports venue is Amahoro Stadium, a large multi-purpose stadium opened in 1986 with a seating capacity of 45,508. It hosts matches of the Rwanda national football team as well as major public and cultural events.
