Olympic Stadium (French: Stade olympique) is a multi-purpose stadium in Montreal, Quebec, Canada, located at 4545 Pierre-de Coubertin Avenue, next to the Montreal Biodome. Also known as “The Big O”, it was designed by architect Roger Taillibert, built for the 1976 Summer Olympics, and officially opened on July 17, 1976.
The stadium has served as the home venue for several teams, including the Montreal Expos (MLB), Montreal Alouettes/Concordes (CFL), Montreal Manic (NASL), and Montreal Machine (WLAF). It has also hosted selected matches of CF Montréal (MLS).
Olympic Stadium is part of Montreal Olympic Park, a large sports and entertainment complex that includes attractions such as the Montreal Biodome, Planetarium, Montreal Tower, Saputo Stadium, and Maurice Richard Arena. The venue mainly hosts baseball, soccer, and Canadian football games, as well as athletics events and concerts.
With a seating capacity of over 56,000, it is one of the largest stadiums in Canada. Its record attendance was set during a Pink Floyd concert on July 6, 1977, with 78,322 spectators. The stadium has also hosted major international events, including the 2nd IAAF World Cup in Athletics, matches during the 2015 FIFA Women’s World Cup, and the 2017 World Artistic Gymnastics Championships. It is easily accessible via the Pie-IX and Viau metro stations.
