Phnom Penh, Cambodia

Phnom Penh is the largest city of Cambodia, its capital, and a key industrial center. It was formerly known as Krong Chaktomuk Serimongkul, which means the City of Brahma’s Faces. Phnom Penh is located on the banks of the Mekong River, and the total area of its municipal zone is close to 260 square miles. The actual downtown is situated in the western part of the municipal area, on the western and southwestern banks of the river. Phnom Penh can be found in the southern part of the country, about 60 miles from the border between Cambodia and Vietnam. Vietnam’s capital city, Ho Chi Minh City, is located about 140 miles southeast of Phnom Penh, and Bangkok, the capital of Thailand, can be found about 330 miles northwest. Phnom Penh is located in the central part of the Indochina Peninsula in Southeast Asia.

The city is known as the Pearl of Asia, and it is a very popular business and tourist center with numerous landmarks and attractions. Phnom Penh is the center of the capital city’s special administrative area, and the central part of the city is called Khan Doun Penh. It is located near the point where the Mekong and Bassac rivers meet. The largest outskirts of the city include the towns of Angk Snuol, Krong Ta Khmau, Kien Svay, Lvea Aem, Prey Svay, and others. There are numerous small lakes in the western and southwestern parts of the city. A large green zone of the Phnum Samkoh Wildlife Sanctuary is situated about 90 miles west of the downtown area.
