Sargasso Sea

The Sargasso Sea is a part of the North Atlantic Ocean located near the eastern shores of the United States and bounded to the west by the Gulf Stream. It was named after the Sargassum seaweed observed by European explorers in the 16th century. The sea is famous for its deep blue water and exceptional clarity.

Unlike most other seas in the world, the Sargasso Sea has no land boundaries except along its western edge, where it is closest to the eastern coast of the United States. To the north, east, and south, it is defined not by land but by ocean currents, and it can be distinguished from the surrounding Atlantic waters mainly by the color and characteristics of its surface.

The Sargasso Sea is also known as one of the most polluted areas of the Atlantic Ocean. Its system of circular currents tends to trap floating debris, including plastic bottles, packaging, and other waste. As a result, litter accumulates in certain parts of the sea, forming visible patches of marine debris. This pollution poses a serious threat to marine life and contributes to broader environmental concerns. Many environmental organizations have expressed the need for stronger protection measures and more effective control of pollution in the Sargasso Sea.
