Its deepest known point is called the Challenger Deep, situated at the southernmost point of the Mariana Trench (latitude 11.373333, longitude 142.591667). It is approximately 11 kilometers deep.

The Mariana Trench is one of the least explored areas on Earth. It is part of the Mariana Trench Marine National Monument and is also designated as a U.S. National Monument. Despite the extreme pressure and darkness, a diverse range of species lives there, and the site continues to fascinate scientists.

Deepsea Challenger, launched on January 26, 2012, is a deep-submergence vehicle piloted by the film director James Cameron to reach the bottom of the Mariana Trench. During the mission, he collected samples and documented the journey in the film "Deepsea Challenge 3D", which was released in 2014.
