The South Florida Detention Facility, informally known as Alligator Alcatraz, is a migrant detention center located in Ochopee, South Florida, on the site of the former Dade-Collier Training and Transition Airport. It is located inside Big Cypress National Preserve, along the Tamiami Trail, approximately 50 miles west of Miami. Constructed in July 2025 by the State of Florida and the U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS), the facility occupies land that was previously used as a public airport.
The South Florida Detention Facility is located near the Everglades, the largest subtropical wilderness in the United States and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Its location has raised concerns about potential environmental damage and about the living conditions that detainees could face within the facility.
