The Three Mile Island accident occurred at the Three Mile Island Nuclear Generating Station in Pennsylvania, United States. It was the most severe accident in the history of U.S. commercial nuclear power. The facility is located on the Susquehanna River, near Harrisburg International Airport, southeast of Harrisburg, and west of Elizabethtown. The accident occurred in Unit 2 on March 28, 1979, at 4:00 a.m.
Although the Three Mile Island accident did not seriously harm public health, it had a major impact on the nuclear power industry in the United States. It led to reactor shutdowns, slowed new nuclear projects for years, increased public fear, and left one reactor permanently out of use.
In 2024, Constellation Energy announced plans to reopen Three Mile Island Unit 1 by 2028 to help meet the growing demand for carbon-free nuclear power. The plant, renamed the Christopher M. Crane Clean Energy Center, is undergoing major upgrades, supported by Microsoft’s 20-year power purchase agreement.
