Tbilisi: The Capital of Georgia

An old and beautiful city, the capital of Georgia (a small country in Eastern Europe), Tbilisi (თბილისი) is located in the South Caucasus region, on the shores of the Kura River. The city is situated in the eastern part of the country. It is an inland city, with an area of about 195 square miles. Tbilisi has an impressive setting in the foothills of the Caucasus Mountains and is surrounded by green parks, especially in its northern part. It is a key cultural, commercial, educational, and social center of Georgia.

It is located about 280 miles west of Baku, about 170 miles north of Yerevan in Armenia, and about 225 miles northeast of the eastern Turkish city of Erzurum. Tbilisi is a historic city that has many attractions, including numerous museums, churches, notable examples of ancient architecture, fountains, gardens, and parks.

The largest neighborhoods and suburban areas of Tbilisi include Mamkoda, Tsodoreti, Tabakhmela, Patara Lilo, Didi Lilo, Akhaldaba, Martkopi, Gamarjveba, and Krtsanisi. One of the largest cities in the country, Rustavi, is situated about 13 miles southeast of the city center. The capital city is surrounded by mountains, and there are also several natural preserves in the area, such as Tbilisi National Park, Mariamjvari Nature Reserve, and Korughi Managed Reserve.
