Utrecht, The Netherlands

Utrecht is one of the largest cities in the Netherlands and the capital of the province of the same name, located in the central part of the country. The city is part of the extensive Randstad metropolitan area, which also includes the metropolitan regions of other major Dutch cities. Utrecht covers an area of about 38 square miles, with an average elevation of 16 feet, making it generally low-lying. It is approximately 25 miles from Amsterdam, 43 miles from The Hague, and 38 miles northeast of Rotterdam.

Administratively, Utrecht is divided into 10 city quarters, including Leidsche Rijn, Noordoost, Vleuten-De Meern, Zuidwest, Zuid, Overvecht, and four others. The city hosts numerous festivals, cultural and international events, theater and art exhibitions, and celebrations.

One of the oldest cities in the Netherlands, Utrecht is known for its historic architecture, local cuisine, and a wide variety of entertainment venues. Its larger suburbs include Nieuwegein, Houten, Zeist, Bilthoven, and Maarssen, among others. The city and its surroundings are dotted with numerous lakes and rivers, a common feature of this region of the Netherlands.
