Wadi Rum

Wadi Rum (وادي رم) is a protected area in southern Jordan, famous for its striking red-rock desert near the Red Sea and the Saudi Arabian border. The region is also known for its ancient petroglyphs and the remains of temples left by several prehistoric cultures. The name Wadi Rum (Wadi Ramm) is thought to originate from Iram of the Pillars, a legendary lost city mentioned in the Quran.

Designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2011, Wadi Rum is widely recognized as the filming location of Lawrence of Arabia. Today, it is one of Jordan’s most popular tourist destinations, offering many attractions such as Lawrence’s House, Little Bridge, Mushroom Rock, and Um Frouth Rock Arch. The Wadi Rum Village features a natural spring known as Lawrence’s Spring, made famous by T.E. Lawrence, who described the area in Seven Pillars of Wisdom.

Wadi Rum is also a major international film location. Numerous productions have been shot here, including Prometheus, The Martian, Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker, Dune, Dune: Part Two, and many others.

Beyond its cinematic appeal, the region attracts climbers with its unique sandstone mountains and offers unforgettable stays in traditional Bedouin camps. Visitors can also find a few restaurants and small shops as well as various accommodation options throughout the area.
