Wayne County is a county in Utah, United States. It is one of the least populous counties in the state. The county was founded on March 10, 1892, and was named after Wayne County in south-central Tennessee. Loa, located in the western part of the county, serves as the county seat. Other towns and communities in Wayne County include Bicknell, Lyman, Torrey, Hanksville, Fruita, Grover, and Caineville.
The Green River forms the county’s eastern border. Canyonlands National Park is located in this region. Established in 1964, the park spans Wayne, San Juan, Garfield, and Grand counties. It also includes Horseshoe Canyon, a popular tourist attraction known for its impressive Barrier Canyon Style rock art. Other nearby protected areas include Capitol Reef National Park, Glen Canyon National Recreation Area, and Dixie National Forest.
Wayne County is also home to several historic sites and buildings listed on the National Register of Historic Places. These include the Elijah Cutler Behunin Cabin, Cathedral Valley Corral, Fruita Schoolhouse, Hanksville Meetinghouse-School, and the Charles W. and Leah Lee House.
The county is served by Utah State Routes 12, 24, 72, and 95. Wayne County borders Emery County to the north, Garfield County to the south, San Juan County to the east, and Piute County to the west.
