Amman, Jordan

Amman is the capital and the largest city of the Kingdom of Jordan, located in the west-central part of the country. The city lies roughly 37 miles northeast of the Dead Sea and is part of the famous Levant region in the western Asian continent, also known as the Eastern Mediterranean region.

The city of Amman is situated on the East Bank Plateau, sometimes referred to as the Transjordanian Highlands, located to the east of the Jordan Valley. The distance from Amman to the Jordan River is approximately 30 miles, and the distance between the cities of Amman and Jerusalem is close to 45 miles. The distance from Amman to the Mediterranean Sea and the city of Tel Aviv is about 70 miles in a straight line.

The city of Amman is divided into a dozen smaller districts, which are not equal in size. The largest districts are located to the south and west of the city center. Several sizable cities can be found near Amman, including Zarqa, Russeifa, As-Salt, and Madaba. They mark the outer areas surrounding the capital city. Other smaller neighborhoods of Amman include Na'ur, Al Dmenah, Al Bayader, Khilda, Maisloun, Abu Nseir, Basman, Al Amir Hasan, Al Maghaba, Al Sharqi, and many others.

The city’s airport, Queen Alia International Airport, is located about 18 miles south of the city center. The Dead Sea and well-known natural sites such as Wadi Mujib and other spring and canyon areas are situated to the southwest of the city of Amman.
