Casablanca, Morocco

The largest city in the Kingdom of Morocco, Casablanca is located in its western part and is the most important cultural, political, commercial, and educational center of the country. Casablanca is the largest municipality of Morocco and lies on the Atlantic Ocean coast, approximately halfway between the cities of Rabat and Marrakesh. Casablanca is famous for its large and modern port, with a cargo turnover exceeding 17 million tonnes per year. The distance from the port of Casablanca to the port of Lisbon is approximately 320 nautical miles, and the distance to the port of Malaga in southern Spain is about 250 nautical miles.

Geography and Location of Casablanca

Casablanca is situated in the lowlands and on part of the Chaouia Plains along the Atlantic Ocean. The total area of the city is close to 8 square miles, with the municipal zone covering about 80 square miles. The downtown area is located in the north-central part of the municipal area.

The central districts include Habbous, Les Hopitaux, Al Fida, Mechouar, Ouled Ziane, Aïn Borja, Hay Tissir, and others. Larger outskirts districts and towns include Maârif, Hay Hassani, Derb Omar, Ancienne Medina, Sidi Moumen, Sidi Bernoussi, Aïn Sebaâ, Sidi Othmane, and Sbata. There is a large arboretum, Bouskoura Forest, located in the southern and southeastern parts of the city.
