Ouarzazate: The Door of the Desert

Ouarzazate (ورزازات) is a city in Morocco, located about 192 kilometers southeast of Marrakesh, near the central part of the country. Known as the “Door of the Desert” or “Gateway to the Sahara,” Ouarzazate is a popular tourist destination that offers a blend of natural beauty, traditional architecture, and cinematic history. The city is served by Ouarzazate International Airport, making it easily accessible for visitors.

The Hollywood of Morocco

The city’s economy mainly relies on tourism and the film industry. It is home to the ISMC – Institute of Professional Training in Cinema Professions, and the famous Atlas Studios, one of the world's largest film studios founded by Mohamed Belghmi in 1983. 

Ouarzazate has earned international fame as a filming location for numerous movies and TV shows. Iconic productions filmed here include Lawrence of Arabia (1962), The Mummy (1999), Gladiator (2000), Kingdom of Heaven (2005), Babel (2006), The Hills Have Eyes (2006), and Aladdin (2019). Additionally, several television series, such as Prison Break, Game of Thrones, and Outer Banks, were filmed in the city.

Tourist Attractions

Located about 30 kilometers northwest of Ouarzazate, Aït Benhaddou is a historic ksar (fortified village) recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1987. It’s one of the most visited landmarks in Morocco and a favorite among filmmakers for its unique architecture.
