Los Alamos, New Mexico: Development Site of the First Atomic Bomb

Los Alamos is a census-designated place in northern New Mexico, United States, located within Los Alamos County. It serves as the seat of the county. It is home to Los Alamos National Laboratory, also known as Project Y, which was established in 1943. Los Alamos was the site where the first nuclear weapons were developed under the Manhattan Project during World War II. Today, parts of the Los Alamos Scientific Laboratory (now Los Alamos National Laboratory), particularly the Manhattan Project-era buildings located near West Jemez Road and Diamond Drive, are listed on the U.S. National Register of Historic Places. The district is also designated as a U.S. National Historic Landmark.

Christopher Nolan's Oppenheimer (2023) was filmed in Los Alamos, with locations like Oppenheimer House and Fuller Lodge. Local attractions include Santa Fe National Forest, the Los Alamos History Museum, Manhattan Project National Historical Park, Bayo Canyon Trail, Fuller Lodge Art Center, Los Alamos Nature Center, Mt. Los Alamos, Los Alamos Project Main Gate, and Los Alamos Canyon Dam & Reservoir. Bandelier National Monument is located to the south of Los Alamos. Los Alamos County Airport and State Road 502 serve the area. Los Alamos is situated 34 miles northwest of Santa Fe.
