Founded in the middle of the 19th century, it is a historic settlement with interesting old-fashioned architecture and beautiful parks. Silver Springs State Park and Coehadjoe Park are the principal tourist attractions, along with the local springs and small lakes. Silver Springs State Park was used as a filming location in Rebel Without A Cause (1955) and Legend (1985). The park features Glass-bottom boat tours, campgrounds, and a nature museum named the Silver River Museum and Environmental Education Center. It is a popular destination for those who enjoy bicycling, camping, hiking, canoeing, and kayaking. State Road 40 serves the area.
